Free Sunday sketching at the Getty
Isn't it hard to imagine any place in the Los Angeles Basin more associated with fine art than the world-famous Getty Center?, the world’s richest museum that cost $1 billion to build.
It’s an interesting place to visit any time, but if you are interested in sketching (like my daughter is), then you might want to come during their special drawing hours.
The Getty Drawing Hour is a free program on the first and third Sundays of the month in 2011 that gives you the chance to spend two hours sketching in front of world renowned masterpieces, with free help and lessons from a professional artist. (Parking is $15)
This would be fun for anyone who likes art, I think, and really great for artists or home schoolers.
The drawing event runs from 3:30-5:30 p.m. You need to sign up in advance, starting at 2:30 p.m. at the Museum Information Desk. They have free materials, or bring your own stuff. Call (310) 440-7330 for more information
Here’s a blog description of how Getty Drawing Hour works
First and third Sundays of the month in 2011:
- June 19
- July 3
- July 17 (note the Getty is closed today due to freeway construction so no class)
- August 7
- August 21
- September 4
- September 18
- October 2
- October 16
- November 6
- November 20
- December 4

New Oak Ranch Ojia
Welcome to Bill and Karen Evenden's New Oak Ranch, a family farm committed to growing quality lavender, Ojai Pixie Tangerines, olives and walnuts. Located in rural southern California, less than 20 miles from the Pacific, the setting is definitely Mediterranean … spectacular mountains, brilliant sunshine, clear blue skies and generous soil. Surrounded by national forest and large ranches, our 24 acres provide perfect pastoral serenity.
Using ecologically responsible farming methods, we cultivate all of our crops with the consumer in mind. We believe that we are merely short-term caretakers of the land and respect the soil, air and water upon which we, and future generations, depend. Our goal is to produce exceptional lavender products, superior olive oil, sweet and petite Ojai Pixie tangerines and tasty walnuts under the watchful eyes of visitors to our ranch. U-Pick Lavender during the lavender season (usually mid-June through end of July). Offering farm visits and farm tours.
Facts: U-Pick Lavender at New Oak Ranch
· U-Pick Lavender begins the weekend of June 19th and runs through the weekend of July 31st.
· Hours are Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
· To visit during the week, or anytime throughout the year, please call (805) 640-1189.
· Admission to the Ranch is FREE but there is a $5.00 per bunch cutting fee.
· New Oak Ranch is located below the Ojai Foundation at 9599 Ojai-Santa Paula Road – just 6 miles east of Ojai and 12 miles west of Santa Paula.

Rodeo fun for the family- save the date!
The Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo is good old entertainment for the entire family, not to mention the richest 2-day rodeo in the nation with a purse totaling over $200,000. The top 30 rodeo contestants in saddle bronc and bareback riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, bull riding and team roping will come to San Juan Capistrano for this chance of a lifetime.
Celebrating the golden age of early California history and the American West, Rancho Mission Viejo has committed to the preservation of the cowboy way of life. Carrying on the cowboy tradition of "passing the hat" in support of a sick child or needy friend, all proceeds from the rodeo will benefit local charities.
